Cozying Up with Big Sur Lanterns

Big Sur Lanterns from Velocity

As summer begins to fade, we find ourselves attracted to different hues and textures. Usually, this is the time we bring out the accessories that are more reminiscent of the cool, late summer temperatures that will most certainly give way to fall. And while we love candlelight year-round,  late summer is ripe for adding a few more candles to your collection.

We found these hand-woven lanterns offer the exact warmth and glow that we crave this time of year. The Big Sur Lanterns are made from sliced vines that are intricately woven into a globe with a glass hurricane inside the globe to hold your favorite candles. We love that these little gems are inspired (and named after) the Big Sur area – offering a rustic look that is perfect for any beach bungalow, or a home that wants to bring in that casual beachy feel.

Velocity offers the Roost Big Sur Lantern in three sizes from 12″ to 19″ in diameter. They range in price from $60 to $105 each (the best prices we’ve found yet for these). These lovely lanterns are sure to become a seasonal favorite.

Relax with this Twist on Water Skis!

Relax with a WaterSki Chair!

Ready to get out your water skis for the summer? Maybe it’s time to put a new spin on things! The folks at WaterSkiChairs.com cleverly use vintage wooden water skis to create this adirondack-style chair.

We fell for this retro look the first time we saw it a couple of years ago and are happy to report that it’s a look still going strong. In fact, the surge in eco-friendly items has probably helped make this concept more popular than ever. Starting around $1,200 per chair, it’s not exactly inexpensive, but we love it, anyway. If your budget isn’t up for it, you can opt for a water-ski table for $549.

Every table and chair is custom-made, which mean no two are exactly alike. The craftmanship is pristine – so this “ski” should be around for a long while.

Weekend Getaways at Hangout Beach Music Fest and MayFest

Beach Festivals in the South!

Love the beach? Love music? Then you are in for a treat this weekend. Pack your bags and head for a mini-vacation by the shore at a beach music festival near you!

We know the Gulf Coast beaches from Louisiana to Florida have gotten a lot of attention lately because of the oil spill, but this weekend Alabama’s Gulf Coast is the place to be for fun, music, art, food – and of course gorgeous, sandy-white beaches. All reports show that the water and beaches remain clear, and the weather isn’t bad, either! You couldn’t ask for more perfect conditions for the area’s first annual Hangout Beach Music Festival. It kicks off tonight with a pre-party and officially gets underway Friday (May 14). This festival is on the beach in beautiful Gulf Shores, Alabama and for a first time festival, it has been able to attract over 60 amazing bands and musical artists.

Among those lined up are the Zac Brown Band, Black Crowes, Allison Krausse, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Gov’t Mule, John Legend, and The Flaming Lips. Truly, this is a small sampling and we can assure you there is something for everyone at this festival. The festival runs through Sunday (May 16) with a three-day weekend pass for $159 and day passes for $82. We’ll also have folks on the beach all weekend covering the festival for us at 365Beach, so check in with us frequently to get updates and catch interviews with some of the artists.

If you happen to be on the east coast this weekend, Myrtle Beach is also throwing quite a shin-dig! Saturday, May 15 kicks off the month-long MayFest and the grand re-opening of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. This mile-long oceanfront boardwalk has been highly anticipated, so much so that they are celebrating its re-opening with the area’s first Beach Music Festival. They have a celebrity-packed weekend planned with everyone from TLC’s The Cake Boss to the legendary, Ben E. King. Also performing are coastal favorites, The Embers and Jim Quick & Coastline. You can even catch a sneak preview of things on Friday morning’s broadcast of the CBS Early Show – they’ll be live on the Boardwalk to kick things off.

If you’re not going to make it to South Caroline or Florida in time for one of these festivals, don’t despair. From now until early fall, there are hot and happening beach music festivals planned from coast to coast. We list four fabulous festivals on 365Beach, but there are plenty more. If you have a favorite festival (music or otherwise, drop us a line (at info@365Beach.com) and let us know about it so we can add it to our events calendar!)

Making-up Under the Sea

Make-up Bag from Vineyard Vines

Looking for a fresh take on your make-up bag? This preppy-inspired pouch is a fun take-along for any beach trip. From seahorses to sand dollars, the images of the sea are lightly woven throughout the design. See how many different beach items you can find – we count six!

When you’re finished playing “I spy,” be sure to stop by Vineyard Vines and add this adorable make-up case to your collection. The “Under the Sea” bag is available in Cayman (pink) for $40. You can also pair it with a matching tote available in Cayman, or the complementary and sleek Vineyard Navy. Both the tote and make-up bag are made from 100 percent cotton-printed canvas.  The tote is also lined with striped Oxford and features an inside pocket for extra storage.

Mermaids on High Tie-d

But that’s not all! While at Vineyard Vines, be sure to shop around.  The online store offers a wide variety of casual clothes, relaxing beachwear and accessories.  Located on Martha’s Vineyard and founded by two brothers  (Ian and Shep Murray), this inspired shop has an extensive selection of clothing for men, too.

In fact, for that man in your life that’s not afraid of fashion, check out their line of quirky but tasteful beach ties.  We’re kind of partial to this more subtle mermaid tie, but there’s also everything from palm tree and coral to cheeseburgers and lobsters. Ties start at $75.

Soft Landings with Clayton Gray Home

Beachball Birdie from Clayton Gray

If you’re anything like us, you probably have a soft spot for pillows. They are an easy piece of decor to change out on a whim or to help add a spot of  color to a favorite room without a huge investment of time or money.  Pillows are of particular joy when they not only  provide a comfy place to rest your weary bones but look great doing so!  That’s one reason we were drawn to these charming throw pillows from Clayton Gray Home (one of our new favorite stores!).

Inspired by and named after the nursery rhyme, the “Rain rain go away” pillow is all cotton and uses handmade cut-out shapes to tell its tale. Who can’t relate to the  little bird perched on a beach ball, waiting patiently for the rain to pass so she can continue playing at the shore? At 20″ square and $120, this made-to-order pillow is a whimsical addition to any beach lover’s home. Not to mention, we truly appreciate that this bit of coastal charm is not your typical look, featuring coral or starfish. We love them all, of course, but it’s nice to see a more creative  interpretation of beach scenes, and something that works in a more casual space!

How Do You Spell Fun? B-E-A-C-H!

Speaking of interpreting beach… sometimes the literal works just fine. Do we have to spell it out for you? We think this smaller throw pillow, also from Clayton Gray Home, says it all. With B-E-A-C-H intentions made clear, the appliqued letters on this natural cotton pillow makes it the ideal companion piece to the “bird” pillow.  Available in coral/pink or neutrals, it is 12″ high by 18″ wide and offered at $120 – and is also made to order.

What are you waiting for? Better order quick and have these adorable pillows ready for summer!

Dive into Beach Decor with this Retro Swimmer

Swimming in Detail from Cottage

Looking to make a splash this summer? Perhaps doing the backstroke and butterfly are part of your daily routine. Or, maybe you simply prefer to let the waves lap across your toes during an afternoon stroll along the water’s edge. Either way, we found a playful way to pay homage to a day at the beach.

This antiqued wooden retro diver is an eye-catching addition to any beach-inspired decor. From head (or fingers in this case) to toe,  this bathing beauty is a full five feet long. With secure, hanging hardware along her back, you can place the diver just about anywhere – including outside, although locations protected from the sun are best to minimize weather damage.

This especially playful piece has a distressed finish, with hand-painted detail and is a nice complement to most decor. We found this version available in a teal finish from Cottage for $159 (with free shipping). The site shows the retro diver in two more finishes (a reddish-orange color and a pea green), but there’s no place to select a color choice. This is a bit confusing. Just know that if teal is not part of your preferred color palette, you can probably find this piece elsewhere in another color. That said, Cottage does give you a choice in size. An exact replica of the retro diver can be had in a smaller size of just under four feet (46 inches) across for $110, plus shipping.

Both sizes are good deals. Think of the conversations you can start this summer! Can’t resist the temptation to bring the retro diver home? Be sure to send us photos showing off your find – and where you decided to hang it!
