Weekend Getaways at Hangout Beach Music Fest and MayFest

Beach Festivals in the South!

Love the beach? Love music? Then you are in for a treat this weekend. Pack your bags and head for a mini-vacation by the shore at a beach music festival near you!

We know the Gulf Coast beaches from Louisiana to Florida have gotten a lot of attention lately because of the oil spill, but this weekend Alabama’s Gulf Coast is the place to be for fun, music, art, food – and of course gorgeous, sandy-white beaches. All reports show that the water and beaches remain clear, and the weather isn’t bad, either! You couldn’t ask for more perfect conditions for the area’s first annual Hangout Beach Music Festival. It kicks off tonight with a pre-party and officially gets underway Friday (May 14). This festival is on the beach in beautiful Gulf Shores, Alabama and for a first time festival, it has been able to attract over 60 amazing bands and musical artists.

Among those lined up are the Zac Brown Band, Black Crowes, Allison Krausse, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Gov’t Mule, John Legend, and The Flaming Lips. Truly, this is a small sampling and we can assure you there is something for everyone at this festival. The festival runs through Sunday (May 16) with a three-day weekend pass for $159 and day passes for $82. We’ll also have folks on the beach all weekend covering the festival for us at 365Beach, so check in with us frequently to get updates and catch interviews with some of the artists.

If you happen to be on the east coast this weekend, Myrtle Beach is also throwing quite a shin-dig! Saturday, May 15 kicks off the month-long MayFest and the grand re-opening of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. This mile-long oceanfront boardwalk has been highly anticipated, so much so that they are celebrating its re-opening with the area’s first Beach Music Festival. They have a celebrity-packed weekend planned with everyone from TLC’s The Cake Boss to the legendary, Ben E. King. Also performing are coastal favorites, The Embers and Jim Quick & Coastline. You can even catch a sneak preview of things on Friday morning’s broadcast of the CBS Early Show – they’ll be live on the Boardwalk to kick things off.

If you’re not going to make it to South Caroline or Florida in time for one of these festivals, don’t despair. From now until early fall, there are hot and happening beach music festivals planned from coast to coast. We list four fabulous festivals on 365Beach, but there are plenty more. If you have a favorite festival (music or otherwise, drop us a line (at info@365Beach.com) and let us know about it so we can add it to our events calendar!)

Classic Seaside Accessories from The Brimfield Fair

Sail away at Brimfield Fair

One of our favorite things to do is peruse thrift stores, vintage shops and antique shows for coveted treasures from (or inspired by) the sea. And we have quite a collection growing! However, there’s always room for more. That’s why our second favorite thing to do is to shop finds put up for sale by other savvy scavengers. And it just so happens we heard from a new friend yesterday who found some adorable belt buckles from the Brimfield Fair.

Designer and boutique owner of The Pink Pineapple, Stacie Hall was fortunate to find these buckles –  one spells out “SAIL” and the other is a Whale buckle that says “Save the Whales”  ($38 each, buckle only). She is making them available in her store but tells us there is a limited supply – only about a dozen of each.  These will be available online today, but you better hurry!

We can’t wait to hear what other treasures folks find at this May’s  Brimfield Fair. For those of you not familiar. The Brimfield Fair is a very popular antiques fair held a few times a year in Massachussetts. It is thought to be “one of the top three flea markets” in the U.S., according to Frommers. A tradition since 1959, more than 700 exhibitors offer their wares. The Brimfield Fair opens to the public this weekend, starting at 8am Friday ($5 admission fee) and continues Saturday (free admission).  If you can’t make it this weekend, no worries, you can try again in July and September. In the meantime, thanks to Stacie Hall for giving the rest of us an opportunity to scoop up one of her great finds!

Beaded Bangles for the Beach

Beaded Bracelets for the Beach

We’re in the mood for a little sophisticated fun! And these striking beaded bangles from the Pink Pineapple are set to cure our itch.

Can’t you just imagine yourself heading to dinner by the shore dressed in a bright, casual-style tunic accentuated by one of  these colorful bracelets ($38) dripping off your arm? Heads will definitely turn as you walk into the room!

We love that these accessories include some of the hottest colors of the season – especially the teal.  If you need a little something extra to go with the bracelet (say, the rest of the outfit!), be sure to visit the Pink Pineapple. The Rhode Island-based shop includes an entire line of boutique items designed by Stacie Hall. We love it all, and know you will, too!

Style Update! Well, we just heard directly from the designer, Stacie Hall,  and got the most-up-to-date scoop on what’s hot right now. She tells us the icon hoodie ($128) is a must-have and we can see why with its preppy colors and casual feel. Of course, our money is also on this exquisite hand-stiched shirt ($76) with its soft cotton/silk fabric and hand whipstitching cascading down the bodice. Tell us your favorite pick!

Becoming The Hip Hostess this Summer

Serving up Avocado a la mode!

Speaking of entertaining… We know many of you have had a busy week of celebrating. And with summer just around the corner, we’re sure you are already gearing up for a season full of soriees!  Given you’re in the mood for entertaining, why not go all the way and make sure you look absolutely dashing while serving up that delicious seafood by the shore this summer?

We found this very beach-chic sheath apron in “avocado al la mode” ($39). It’s casual style lends itself to that informal gathering with friends and family. Yet, it’s adorable enough to make you want to keep it on all through the meal! The scallop trim at the bottom has a flirty flounce to it, and the halter-style neck ties definitely exude a summer vibe.

The mother-daughter team from The Hip Hostess is responsible for this playful new take on the traditional apron. Their mission says it all – “combine simple, contemporary style with fabulous fabrics to create a “couture in the kitchen” look that today`s modern woman will want and actually wear.” We agree. Want to wear it!

Of course, there are lots of colors and styles to suit every personality – and

The Hip Hostess in Melon Splash!

every occasion.  For those days when you’re prepping lunches for a house full of kids – or summer guests, we like the vibrant fun of the  “melon splash” demi-style apron ($32).  This shorter, even more casual look is ideal for those times when you’re preparing a quick meal or cleaning around the house. Yes, someone still has to clean, even in the summer – so you might as well look cute doing it!

UPDATE #2: Although we found a great offer earlier via Twitter (@TheHipHostess), our wonderful friends at The Hip Hostess have created an offer especially for us! Just stop by, pick out your favorite aprons and receive a very generous 20 percent off! Just use the product code BEACH at checkout and you will be an official “hip hostess” and a savvy shopper! Hurry, though. This special offer is only available to us through the end of the month (5/31).

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo Beachside!

Celebrate with handblown margarita glasses

Did you celebrate Cinco de Mayo?  Although the official “holiday” has passed, you can still enjoy the foods, drinks and traditions of the Mexican culture throughout the month of May – and beyond! We found a few recipes, stories and products to share with you as you start mixing your Margaritas, beachside (or poolside, or barside, or wherever you may be)!

While you may think you are celebrating a true Mexican holiday, it turns out this an occasion that has been embraced more by Americans than by our neighbors south of the border.  True, it is a day that evolved as a pseudo-celebration of the 1862 Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla. However, according to this story, it gained attention in the U.S. in the 1950s by political activists looking for a way to bridge our two cultures and improve cross-border relations. A few decades later, it was capitalized on by savvy marketers (read beer companies) as a fun way to increase sales in a nation that was happy to have another reason to party.

Well, as we know many of our 365Beach readers do enjoy entertaining and imbibing in the occasional cocktail, who are we to deny the opportunity to celebrate a neighboring culture? And we particularly love a celebration filled with good foods and drink! If you haven’t already planned your menu, we suggest Continue reading

Snuggling by the Shore in Rough Linen

Orkney Rough Linens

When one thinks of a soft, comforting fabric to snuggle under, “rough linen” doesn’t exactly sound like it would fit the bill. However, this high-quality linen fabric actually feels wonderful and is quite soft, with a handwoven-style texture.  That’s why we can’t imagine a more delightful material for these amazing duvets from Rough Linen

The feel of this natural fabric, combined with the gentle hue of the Orkney Rough Linen duvet (shown) just makes us want to crawl under the covers and spend the day! These hand-sewn duvets range from approximately $200 to $410 (King) but are worth every dime.  Pillows, shams and bed skirts are also available, of course – and equally worth the splurge.

You should also know that great care goes into the creation of each piece by a wonderful seamstress and designer who envisioned this line of luxury bedding. She uses “French seams… overcast raw seams… and Gutermann thread” to name just a few of the techniques and materials.  We don’t pretend to know what any of those things are, but they sound intricate and precise. What we do know is that the outcome is lovely! The Orkley duvets also use buttons (as shown below) for a very natural look – and there are several button options from which you can choose for a truly custom piece. It’s yet another example of the care and attention to detail that goes into every piece.

For those of you with a more playful side, Rough Linen also offers a line of
“St. Barts” linens that have a more nautical inspiration with “soft, sunbleached colors.”  These linens are also made with a “lighter, finer texture” but are just as soft and inviting. If you’re shopping for a new look for your bedroom or guest rooms this summer, these duvets offer a beach-inspired subtlety that is ideal. Enjoy!

Paint Me a Picture

Ducks at Sailboat Bay

Sometimes you are simply and inexplicably drawn (no pun intended!) to an object. Whether it be a small sea shell washed ashore or a set of elaborately, hand-embroidered linens. For whatever reason, these items resonate with you – and call to you to take them home. That’s certainly the case with this painting from Karen Fields, aptly titled “Ducks at Sailboat Bay” ($99).

Karen’s work, first inspired by a “naive, folk painting style,” is now infused

Folk-inspired Art from Karen Fields

with her passion for the “lively and colorful.” It’s easy to see how these two artistic views easily collided into a single, whimsical vision. To our delight, this Orlando-based artist has swept her brush across the canvas to capture scenes inspired by the sea.

These bright, engaging works of art seem to beg you to kick off your shoes, roll up your pantlegs and dip your toes into the water. It certianly makes us want to pack a picnic lunch and head for the shore to watch the sailboats glide along the water. That’s why we think these coastal-coated canvases deserve to hang in a place of honor in your beach house (or any beach lover’s home that strives to share a bit of whimsy and fun).

Do you have a favorite coastal artist? Drop us a line at info@365Beach.com and let us know so we can share their talents.
